Description
GUARDIAN SERIES – Home Standby Generators
Automatic. Permanent. Ready before you are.
A home standby generator is installed permanently outside the house, much like an air conditioning condenser, and wired to your switchboard through an automatic transfer switch. The transfer switch watches the incoming mains supply continuously. When it sees the power drop out it signals the generator to start, waits for the output to stabilise, then moves the house across to generator supply. Nobody has to be home, and there are no leads to drag out or fuel to carry. The transfer switch is a separate item, sized to the generator and to your supply.
Because the Guardian runs on natural gas or LP gas rather than petrol or diesel, there is no fuel to store and nothing to go stale between outages. Connected to a mains gas line it will run for as long as the outage lasts. Every unit exercises itself for five minutes on a set schedule so you find out it is healthy long before you need it, and Mobile Link Wi-Fi monitoring reports status, run hours and maintenance alerts to your phone.
This 20kVA home standby generator is the three phase Guardian, for properties on a three phase supply – larger homes, rural properties, and houses with workshop or irrigation loads that a single phase set will not carry. It delivers 20,000 VA on LP gas and 17,000 VA on natural gas at 380, 400 or 416 V.
Check your switchboard before ordering this one. If the house is on a standard single phase supply, the 10kVA or 13kVA Guardian is the right unit and this one cannot be connected. Where three phase is available, this set holds total harmonic distortion under 5 percent, runs at 65 dB(A) at 7 metres and drops to 59 dB(A) in Quiet-Test low-speed exercise mode.

Cylinder run times are calculated from the LP gas consumption figures above, at 1 kg of LPG to 1.96 litres. Actual times vary with load, ambient temperature and cylinder condition. A single cylinder can only give off vapour so fast, so installations of this size are normally run from a bank of cylinders or a mains gas connection. Your gas fitter will size the supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an automatic transfer switch included?
No. The transfer switch is ordered separately. This three phase Guardian is paired with the LTS 100A (3Ph) Gas transfer switch. Add it to the same order and the pair arrives together.
Will this work on my house?
Only if the property is on a three phase supply. Most Australian homes are single phase, in which case the 10kVA or 13kVA Guardian is the correct choice. Check the switchboard or ask your electrician before ordering.
Why is the natural gas rating lower than the LP rating?
It carries 20,000 VA on LP gas and 17,000 VA on natural gas. Natural gas has a lower energy content per cubic metre, so the same engine produces less output on it. Size to the 17,000 VA figure if you are connecting to mains gas.
How long will it run on a 45 kg gas bottle?
About 12.3 hours at half load or 7.9 hours at full load. A 90 kg cylinder gives roughly 24.6 and 15.9 hours, and a 210 kg cylinder roughly 57.5 and 37.0 hours. This set draws about 5.7 kg of LPG an hour at full load, which is more than one cylinder can supply as vapour, so plan on a bank of cylinders or mains gas.
Can Ozwide arrange the installation?
Yes. We can organise the licensed gas fitter and electrician to install and commission the system, so you are not left coordinating two trades yourself. Tell us the property address and what you want backed up and we will quote the supply and the installation together.
Does it run on natural gas or LPG?
Both. The Guardian is configured for natural gas or LP gas operation. On a mains gas connection there is nothing to refill, so run time is limited only by the length of the outage.
What warranty does it carry?
Five year limited warranty. The unit is RCM approved for sale and use in Australia.
